Stories in the medical press these days point to problems with conventional pharmaceutical drugs ~ such as side effects and immunity with continued use ~ and so it’s only natural that we should look to the past to see how our ancestors kept body and soul together.
Silver was one remedy they used for a whole host of diseases, going back thousands of years and, today, silver is used in colloidal silver therapy. So what is colloidal silver therapy, how does it work and is it safe to use today?
Going way back into history, the ancient Phoenicians used to store water, wine, and vinegar in silver bottles to prevent spoiling. In the early 1900s, people would put silver coins in milk bottles to prolong the milk’s freshness.Hippocrates, the “father of modern medicine”, wrote that silver had beneficial healing and anti-disease properties.
In the early 1900s, before the invention of pharmaceutical antibiotics, silver was officially approved by the regulatory authorities as an antimicrobial agent. It was used as a germicide and disinfectant and by physicians as an eyedrop for eye diseases such as conjunctivitis. Silver nitrate is still used by doctors today to treat eye diseases in newborn babies and also to eradicate skin eruptions like warts and corns. It was also found useful for tropical diseases, epilepsy, gonorrhea, and the common cold.
Before World War 2, colloidal silver was prescribed by doctors and used in hospitals as an antibiotic as it apparently kills up to 650 known bacteria, as well as curbing very serious diseases such as cholera, malaria, diabetes, candida (and other fungal infections) and syphilis. It was also used for treating burns and skin disorders.
Then, after the wars were over, the chemical industry needed to be repurposed into peace-time businesses. So the pharmaceutical companies were established in which disease-killing chemical compounds were researched and manufactured into pills. In order to get a medicine approved to be sold, it now has to undergo a battery of very expensive tests, and so this is how pharmaceutical products came to be given the green light over more alternative tried and tested remedies.
How does colloidal silver therapy work?
Scientists have found that a very little colloidal silver goes a long way. Five parts per million (or higher) colloidal silver kills many different infectious bacteria and was therefore very useful as an antibiotic. Colloidal silver kills bacteria by slowing down the production of enzymes and other proteins.
Despite having been used in the early 20th century in mainstream medicine, colloidal silver has not been properly tested using today’s standards. This means that there is no overriding evidence to suggest that colloidal silver is actually an effective form of therapy for any of the above-mentioned conditions, although it is being used in alternative medicine circles to some effect.
Basically, there may be some truth to its efficacy, but it is not available over the counter as a product that has a therapeutic value. Because in the US, the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) has banned any products that have not been extensively tested for safety and effectiveness, including colloidal silver, it means that the product is only available as a dietary supplement and cannot be sold by anyone (in the US) who is claiming that it has therapeutic value.
So we can’t claim any therapeutic value for it here ~ only that you try it for yourself, and see. You can buy colloidal silver in most good health food shops, but do follow the instructions on the label because a little goes a long way, and too much can cause a condition called argyria in which the skin turns blue.
