How to tell your English county council not to fluoridate your drinking water

By Ishtar Babilu Dingir

Most people who know anything about health assumed that the case against sodium fluoride in drinking water had been won decades ago. So quite incredibly, it’s raising its head again in the form of a myopic and narrowly-premised report by Public Health England, an executive agency of the Department of Health which was established a year ago.

“Figures lie, and liars figure.”

PHE is insisting, from its partial and statistically insignificant study, that fluoride in drinking water is good for children’s health and is suggesting that local councils start fluoridating our water supplies.

Now either the people at this new health agency are incredibly ignorant and stupid, or they want our children to be brain damaged. Either way, we shouldn’t be listening to them about what is good for our children’s health because they seem to have totally ignored the fact that fluoride is now listed as a neurotoxin by Harvard scientists, who recently published about this in no less than the esteemed medical journal, The Lancet.

As we reported in our article The Lancet publishes on ‘silent epidemic’ of widespread slow poisoning by the global chemical industry, in the March 2014 journal Lancet Neurology, fluoride was reclassified as a developmental neurotoxin by Dr. Philippe Grandjean of the Harvard School of Public Health and Dr. Philip Landrigan of the Icahn School of Medicine said.

Developmental neurotoxins are known to cause widespread brain disorders such as autism, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and learning disabilities.

Dr Grandjean said:

“A meta-analysis of 27 cross-sectional studies of children exposed to fluoride in drinking water, mainly from China, suggests an average IQ decrement of about seven points in children exposed to raised fluoride concentrations.”

“Our very great concern is that children worldwide are being exposed to unrecognized toxic chemicals that are silently eroding intelligence, disrupting behaviours, truncating future achievements and damaging societies, perhaps most seriously in developing countries.”

To help protect children’s brain development, the authors say it’s extremely important to control the use of such harmful chemicals. In the study, they have proposed mandatory testing of these chemicals and request an immediate formation of a new international clearinghouse to evaluate them for potential neurotoxicity.

“Fluoride seems to fit in with lead, mercury, and other poisons that cause chemical brain drain,” Grandjean says. ”The effect of each toxicant may seem small, but the combined damage on a population scale can be serious, especially because the brain power of the next generation is crucial to all of us.”

Paul Connett, PhD, executive director of the Fluoride Action Network, agreed:

“In light of the new classification of fluoride as a dangerous neurotoxin, adding more fluoride to the average American’s already excessive intake no longer has any conceivable justification. We should follow the evidence and try to reduce fluoride intake, not increase it,”

In America, the tapwater was fluoridated in 1945, beginning in Michigan, and now 42 of the 50 biggest cities have joined the program. The practice is encouraged and maintained by the Center for Disease Control (CDC)

Yet the CDC’s own evidence reveals Americans already show symptoms of fluoride-overexposure and reports that 41 percent of American teenagers have dental fluorosis, a physical sign that they ingested too much fluoride while their teeth were forming. Evidence also indicates these markers in the U.S. are not decreasing over time, but are increasing.

Connett asks, “Why would the CDC persist in going against the tide of evidence to promote higher fluoride intake? Sadly, it seems, health agencies in fluoridated countries seem to be more intent on protecting the fluoridation program than protecting children’s brains.”

And there you have it…. countries are more intent on promoting their fluoridisation business opportunities than in protecting our children’s mental health.

PHE is recommending that our county councils consult with us before going ahead. So this will be our chance to make it clear to them that we don’t want sodium fluoride in our tap water because we don’t want our children to be brain damaged. It’s a no brainer.
