In researching for our app, Shop GMO-Free in the UK, we were shocked to discover how many household name food producers couldn’t guarantee whether their meat and dairy came from animals fed on GM-free feed. These foods are classified as ‘secondary products’ – and under current EU legislation, food producers in the UK are not required to note whether their secondary products contain GM organisms on their labels.
In other words, they don’t have to tell us if their meat and dairy comes from animals which are fed on feed which contains GMs. However, when we wrote to them, very few were willing to guarantee that their secondary products were GM-free when they weren’t, and we’ve listed them in the app accordingly.
Many hid behind the ‘science’ but as this article shows, a study has just been published which confirms the health risks of eating meat and dairy products where the animals have not been fed GM-free fed.
